Well I have successfully managed to waste two days resurrecting an old Linux box.... like Red Hat 5.2 (circa 1998). I have messed with this off an on over the years since I first got it and had it at various stages of completion. So far I got it installed, xwindows configured, network set up... yes it will boot DHCP... apache web server is set up (my fake users can create web pages).

Seems like......... there is more to learn from these older distros.... I am running a much newer version of PC linux as a desktop OS and honestly I could not even tell you what the hostname is (or if there even is one)

question is.... is this even worth messing with? (Probably not). My goal is/was simply to learn about networking.... setting up a router, bridge, sharing a network connection, etc..

I was eyeing copies of windows 2000 server on Ebay..... but even that is 15 years old! Is that a better use of time?

(just curious)

I certainly think so. Most older distros didn't have the same scripting and toolkit layers which meant more configuration had to be performed by users.

There are modern options for learning this stuff. OpenBSD is a very meat-and-potatoes UNIX which provides powerful general capabilities but is configured in a fairly traditional way.
