The microsoft synth does not appear as a choosable option in my windows 98se laptop because of its sound card drivers. However, gm.dls still exists, and testing through dxdiag still works. Do I have to edit the registry or something to reenable this feature?

WDM sound drivers are needed for the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth to appear as an option; nothing else will work. The only choice is to look for them from the laptop manufacturer; if they don't exist, you're SOL.

Ooohh, the pain......

There are two drivers listed on the company website for the es1869 embedded in the Compaq Armada 1750 laptop I am using. The vxd one works, the wdm one doesn't.

...well, that settles that. Feel free to close this thread.
