I'm running Ubuntu Linux 16.04.

After getting the source (which wouldn't compile, see [1]),
I used the command
. $ sudo apt install dosbox
to install it, which appeared to work fine.

But when I start up the program (from ubuntu's menu bar) I get this:
. $ /usr/bin/dosbox -?
. DOSBox version 0.74
. Copyright 2002-2010 DOSBox Team, published under GNU GPL.
. ---
. Exit to error: Can't init SDL No available video device
.
. $

Please fix.

libsdl not installed? Dunno- that should have been a dependency listed. No video drivers? Unlikely... Hmm...
You might as well try sudo apt-get install libsdl or something.
