Is there any way to get the drivers to work after booting in DOS only? I have XP and use a startup CD to boot into DOS so I can play Duke3D... VESA and mouse work, but when I try to load DOSDRV it freezes.

I recommend you see this thread.
showthread.php?threadid=426

To summarize:
It may eventually be ported to Win9x/ME. But never to DOS. DOSDRV is only meant to be run in Windows NT 4/2000/XP.

Why do you want to run VDMSound in DOS? What, exactly, is your problem? Please see the posting guidelines here:

Anyhow, you don't have to dual-boot anymore for Duke. Use VDMSound in XP and read this thread:

and this one:

I got it to work but the sound just sounds a little funny.

I didn't know about Ken's patch yet, that's why I didn't know it was possible to play in XP in VESA, so why don't you chill out. Another thing, I'm not providing all that useless information every time I ask for help.

Heh, you must have misinterpreted me. When I said "what, exactly, is your problem" I wasn't trying to be demeaning. I just wanted to know what your problem is - why you'd want sound card emulation in DOS.

Another thing, I'm not providing all that useless information every time I ask for help.

The list of guidelines is there to ease the process of tracking down and resolving problems. It's not useless information.

Anyhow, your problem seems to be solved, so I'm closing this thread.

He was trying to help you, so why don't you show him some respect.

Then don't expect much in the way of help. It's there for a reason.

Take a look at your original post:

Is there any way to get the drivers to work after booting in DOS only?

It's vague. You could mean a VESA driver, or soundcard drivers. Even if we guessed correctly, we still wouldn't have any idea what kind of soundcard as you haven't told us.

I have XP and use a startup CD to boot into DOS so I can play Duke3D...

You mean using a custom CD that has some form of DOS on it or are you using the XP install to drop to a command-line level of the OS? It's not clear (no version number or description).

VESA and mouse work, but when I try to load DOSDRV it freezes.

If you're trying to load the DOSDRV portion of VDMSound while at the command-line level (no GUI), then it's not going to work as it's designed to work with the entire OS (including the GUI), much of which hasn't been loaded because you have no GUI.

If you are trying to use it with any variant of MS-DOS (5,6, or the Win9x versions) then it's not going to work either at it wasn't designed for those OS's.

The less info you give, the harder an issue is to troubleshoot. If you register with the board, you can place your system specifications in there, then refer people to your profile for your system specs with each new question. Help us to try to help you.

Like I said before, If you can't be bothered with providing the requested information then why should the people here be bothered with helping you?
