I have a couple of Microsoft SideWinder Plug & Play USB gamepads that I use primarily for racing games. I like these controllers because they're simple, don't require any special software to use, and work with virtually every game and computer I own.

There is a small problem with these controllers, though. Since they're "Plug & Play," they don't come with any software (i.e., drivers, configuration utilities), and there is no way to remap the buttons. This can be an issue with games that aren't flexible enough to create the mapping I prefer. (The Need for Speed SE is a prominent example.)

I've tried versions 3.02 and 4.0 of the Microsoft SideWinder software, neither of which appears to support this model. Does anyone know of a generic joystick utility that might work in this case? (must support Windows 98)
