Like, a software that can check your various cards and determine how they are setup, any conflict etc.

And also being able to play music in all sorts of different formats, so that one can compare how it sounds and whether or not their hardware is compatible with adlib, soundblaster/pro/16/32/awe/64, GUS, MIDI, and whatever I'm forgetting at the moment?

I use xtc-play and gsplay. If there is a wrong DMA or IRQ set the behavior of xtc-play allows to tell instantaneously which has to be changed.
As most modern cards can be configured by software/ISA PnP from the cmdline, everything is finished in a few minutes.
