So this is my first post here, I'm very excited to start building a Windows 98 PC.

I did some research and saw some builds online and it seemed like a really good build to shoot for was with the Intel 440BX chipset. I read some reviews that were from 1998 that listed the Asus P2B as the top motherboard of the year. I had also seen that mobo in a few of the videos I watched. It seemed really awesome so I looked on ebay and made an offer on one and the guy accepted. It looked really nice but then I was just looking at it and I noticed it looked a lot smaller than the other p2b boards I had been seeing. I realized it was the AT form factor p2b-b.

Now I am kicking myself because my planned build took into account that the board would have a ps/2 mouse and keyboard connection as well as the 2 usb ports. I am wondering, does anyone know a way around this via the PCI slots? Or do you think it is not work it and I should just cut my losses, the mobo was a good deal and came with a PIII 800mhz SL457. I got it for $39.

I'm really new to building retro PCs so pardon if I seem a little uninformed. This will be the 4th PC I have built but it is definitely not as easy as it is now with pcpartpicker.com and all of the other resources that can be used.

The build I had planned was:

Asus P2B
PIII 800mhz
Nvidia Riva TNT2
(perhaps another card but all in all I think from what I read that the TNT2 would be good enough for me, I love the SLI'd Voodoo2 setup that I always see but it seems pretty expensive)
Creative Sound Blaster Live

There is a Hitachi CM751U-516 locally on Craigslist for $1 that seems very good.

Then I am still figuring out the rest.

Just like everyone, I want to properly play games like Unreal, Quake, Deus Ex, System Shock 2. I would also love to play some DOS games like Dark Seed, Dreamweb, Neuromancer, Carmageddon, and Blade Runner.

If anyone has any advice I would love to hear it!

The motherboard does have a ps\2 connector, but You would likely have to make the cable up Yourself.

I found one here http://www.ebay.com/itm/PS-2-and-Parallel-LPT … 5XM7J8#shpCntId
You will still have to sort out the wiring though at the motherboard end.

Alternatively sell the motherboard You have just bought and buy this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Asus-P2B-Rev-1-02-Mot … 18AAOSwdIFXz5yr

Atari 2600, TI994a, Vic20, c64, ZX Spectrum 128, Amstrad CPC464, Atari 65XE, Commodore Plus/4, Amiga 500
PC's from XT 8088, 486, Pentium MMX, K6, Athlon, P3, P4, 775, to current Ryzen 5600x.

Or just keep a look out for the asus usb/mir board. looks like this: Bought these (retro) hardware today The ones I see on ebay are teh usb only versions.

I don't think you got screwed on the price. I wouldn't have bought it, but i'm also VERY picky about these machines.

Honestly, I'd just use an usb kb/mouse and be done with it. drop the board in an old style case, pop in ~512mb of ram, go nuts. There are MANY other "better" boards, but honestly, if you're just getting your feet wet, there is nothing wrong with what you have. Pentium 2's and 3's are still very easy, things don't really start hitting the weeds until pre-pentium, or OEM boards. Just stay away from OEM as a general rule.

also, welcome!

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Thanks so much for your replies and warm welcome! I will keep it and have fun building, I really like the AT cases but they are pretty expensive.

I will post my full build on the proper forum when I finish, thanks again!

I have few ATX 440BX boards (Tyan, Chaintech etc) that work with Coppermines and Tualatins, I would trade with the P2B-B for one of those if you want?

Many 3Dfx and Pentium III-S stuff.

Cool games you want to play, too!

Thanks so much for the offer, I acutally scored the original Asus P2B-B expansion PS/2 USB connector after you guys informed me that existed. It was hard to find but with the right search I found it! I'm actually really liking the idea of using an AT case now, though tracking one down at a decent price will be a bit harder. The digital readouts of mhz on the front is so cool.

Check the revision. If it's 1.01, it might not support 800 MHz or most of PIII, for that matter. The revision should be written on the board itself

Here is the actual listing, I haven't received the board yet so I can't physically look. I'm not sure where to be looking within the picture.

Sorry, I did not read the entire original post. If the mobo comes with a PIII 800mhz, it most probably supports it and is a later revision.

I am wondering, does anyone know a way around this via the PCI slots?

I have the same mobo and don't have the MIR thing. I just use a serial (COM) mouse. The COM pins on this mobo are standard, just find something like this. Alternatively, get any multi I/O for ISA, they should be cheap, too.

Thanks jheronimus! The MIR adapter I bought only has USB so adding that COM input via ISA would be ideal I think. It is nice to know there is someone out there with a working build on this mobo.
