Hey!
I've got the opportunity to buy an IBM PS/2 P70 for 80€. Should I go for it?
It doesn't boot, though. Doesn't access the hard disk, according to the seller.
Thanks for your opinions!

Does it display anything? It will display error codes if something is wrong - they are useful for diagnosing the problem. Usually the battery is flat and won't boot from HDD.
I can't say about the price. If you want something price isn't the most important thing...

I would say that non-booting at 80 euro is a bit steep.
If it was booting, then 80 would be too low.
So yeah... Neighter is too high, nor too low.
How exactly does it not boot? Any battery damage?
Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.
Those cakes make you sick....

I say too much. All the PS/2 machines have proprietary expansion slots (not ISA or PCI) and not booting tells me the PSU is probably toast and good luck replacing that. 🤣 Getting parts for these PS/2 systems is costly and a pain anyhow because unless it's refurbished it might just conk out again in a week or so. I have two IBM PS/2 Model 50z 286 computers and they are pretty cool but one needs RAM (which is expensive) and both need new power supplies (they randomly refuse to boot or freeze up right in the middle of doing things) and those are expensive and rare also. So all in all I'd say go buy a Tandy of some kind if you really want a computer from that era, but there are also no shortage of portable 386 laptops and such. I also had a couple PS/2 monitors and both have completely konked out as well. All in all I'd say avoid it like the plague but that's just my opinion.
Check me out at Transcendental Airwaves on Youtube! Fast-food sucks!
Like other PS/2s in IBM's lineup, these use those horribly unreliable ESDI drives. The difference is that these are Direct Bus Attached. I have one of these, but it appears that the board is dead. I replaced the blown 3A fuse on the board (not the keyboard fuse), recapped the power supply, adjusted the voltages to put it in spec, but still nothing.

Check you PM. I might be able to help you with getting a hold of some RAM and a power supply.
Hi!
thanks for all your responses.
I guess I won't buy it, unless the error will likely be something easy to repair (like battery) and if the seller goes down a bit.
However there's another System I've got also the opportunity to buy from the same seller.
IBM PS/2 Model 95 (486) for 100€, System is working. I think I'm definitely going to buy this as these systems are very rare because they were a "bit" expensive back in the days 🤣

Definitely go for the Model 95. Wish i had one!
I have 2 ps/2 model 30 8086 one with and one without working hdd drive. Had to use the reference disk to fix a few problems on boot due to a flat battery, to get them going again. But yes the esdi drives are a pain, and very expensive.
Luckily the model 30 and model 30 286 have normal isa slots. So replacing the drive with something other isn't that big of a problem. You need to modify the psu since it doesn't have a molex connect to hookup other drives.
I have bought a lo-tech 8 bit ide controller to be used with a compact flash card, but i need to order the parts to build the board.
