Hello

I got myself a S3 Trio3D with 8 MB (more precisely a Hercules Terminator 128/3D "GLH") I intend to use with a LCD panel capable of 1600x1200.
I would like to use 1600x1200x32, but I'm only allowed to go as far as 1152x768x32.
1600x1200 is limited to 16 bit.

I'm using 1.09.26103 drivers from Hercules.
Reference drivers from S3, although more recent, still are limited to 1600x1200x16.
I tried hacking the .inf and add a 1600x1200x32 @ 60 Hz. The drivers install ok but the mode isn't available.

Is there something I could try to get that card to work with 1600x1200x32?

Thank you

I think the formula is (1600x1200x32)/8 = 7,680,000 bytes. That's about 7.5MB, which is really close to your 8MB. Maybe there's some overhead keeping it from working?

Do you have 24bpp as an option?

That could be, but what about 1280x1024x32?

That should be more than enough memory for that resolution (5,242,880 bytes), but it isn't available either.

I don't have 24bbp as an option 😒

I think I recall some program to make custom resolutions.

I think it was called PowerStrip or something like that. I'm pretty sure the company that did it went belly up a long time ago, and it wasn't freeware.

Are there other similar programs that can create custom modes in Windows 9x?

You know, I have this vague memory of going through something similar back in the day with my Hercules cards. I owned a lot of them in the mid 1990s and it seems like I couldn't max out the framebuffer on them either. I don't know if Hercules was conservative and maybe castrated the firmware on their cards? I hope that's not the case! Maybe someone else can get you going. 😀

It is most likely a memory transfer limitation of the internal DAC. So it's no bug and working as intended.

Yes, it appears to be the case.
Thank you for the clarification.
