question for a friend
how do i get MPU-401 support on a IBM Thinkpad 600?
think-01.jpg

just wondering..
is the only way to accomplish this to step in unicorn poop + magically find an SCP-55?? 😀

or is there another interface that will properly support SYSEX transfer under DOS
to use a program called "SampleVision" for DOS, a sampler sample manipulation program (http://www.oldschooldaw.com/forums/index.php?topic=2387)

the only thingi could think to suggest to my friend is maybe try a 2portSE or a 1NOTE+ from musicquest/opcode
is there any other solutions for Sysex transfer in DOS? using a LAPTOP???? (no ISA card slots)
i think the laptop does have a PCMCIA so i was checking out other pcmcia solutions PCMCIA Sound Cards from this thread
but i dont know what to tell my friend

its a dos application that communicates via serial to a digital sampler. either way its complicated MIDI data that requires the intelligent mpu-401 capability (i think)
does softMPU somehow link itself to port:330 int:2/9?

SoftMPU uses EMM386 to trap the I/O calls and handle them via the TSR.

USING SOFTMPU: SERIAL MIDI MODE
Run SoftMPU specifying the serial interface to be used and the base port address of the MPU-401 interface, e.g.

SOFTMPU.EXE /MPU:330 /OUTPUT:COM1

A Sound Blaster base port address and IRQ can optionally be specified if MPU-401 interrupts are required.

If you get a SelectaDock III for the Thinkpad 600 (you'll also need a Selectabase 600 adapter), it has a midi/joystick port. It also has other goodies like PCI and ISA slots, SCSI adapter etc. I use one with my Thinkpad 770.

I/O, I/O,
It's off to disk I go,
With a bit and a byte
And a read and a write,
I/O, I/O
