Like, what I mean is- is this card low end, high end? Would an ISA replacement (Cheaper!) be doable instead of going for VLB, or is that really required for Doom 2 at high settings? That's really what this machine is for, and I can tell the XL24 is holding it back. Otherwise it's a DX2-66 with 128kb cache and 32 megs of ram and a nice speedy hard disk.

Basically all I'm looking for is "Is this as far as ISA cards go, or is it low end and faster ISA cards could murder it?"

Is this it? If it is I think You will find it will be unplayable as far as games like Doom go. Get a VLB high end Cirrus Logic or Tseng or S3 card if You want playable frame rates.
I have some Western Digital and Acer and Oak ISA cards that work great for XT's and 286's. In Doom I got around 10fps against 29.5 for my PCI s3 card with a dx2-66.
I Think Tseng made the fastest ISA cards, but a fast VLB card is always faster.

I don't know if mine is the same model or not but almost identical to the one posted above and I tried it a lot with a 386DX-40 and a 486DLC-40. Mine has the ATi 28800-5 chip and 1MB of ram; In terms of build pcb/components quality and also vga signal it's in my opinion better than other isa cards I tried. In terms of speed the Cirrus GD5429 ISA was a bit faster on games but this is a far later chip that was also in VLB cards and mostly for the 386DX both cards were cpu limited. I think maybe it will limit your DX2-66 and it is not the best isa card around but maybe better than many cheaper cards.

For the first generation of VGA cards the ATi VGAWonder XL is one of the faster cards and quite comfortable with the software configurable hardware. Also 1 MB memory and the SVGA modes were top of the line.
Compared to late ISA cards the VGAWonder is mid-range. In a 386 system the gain with a faster VGA card is likely barely noticeable. However with a ISA 486er you may go for a fast late ISA card or if your 486er supports Local Bus then you should always go for such a card.

The XL24 was a low-end to mid range offering from ATi in 1992. By that time, cards with accelerated graphics were in demand. As far ISA cards go, this one is really not too bad if you're just going to do DOS and windows at 640x480x256. It does have true and high colour modes, but they're almost too slow to be usable. In 1992 I had the ATi Graphics Ultra, which used the VGA Wonder Plus VGA core. At the time it was perfectly fine for DOS games. The only incompatibility I ever noticed was with some crappy old CGA games that ran too fast on my 486 to be playable anyway. I would tend to agree that for DOOM 2, a VLB or PCI card is probably what you want. No ISA card is going to make that game run well.

At that time I had a bad Oak (I think OT37) and could not play Wolf3d full screen with the 386SX-20. My level of "smooth frame rate" always been lower than generally used to. 😁

So yes then, there definitely is a bottleneck? Honestly pre-3D accel cards are odd to me- before my time, and I find it hard to quantify their speed. What would be the best match for a DX2-66? I do have a VLB board but I need to order new cache for it- it requires a tag, and all mine are dead.

XL24 was the last and best of the VGA Wonder series. Not too long ago it was fetching a premium on eBay.
The XL24 always fascinated me back in the day, because I was astounded that ATi would include 24-bit colour support on their low end card, and not on their premium Graphics Ultra with accelerated graphics.
