New problem with Impulse Tracker

I'm the "Unregistered" that had the thread about getting IT to work last week.

I have a new problem. I had a harddrive crash and I had to reinstall everything, and now IT is not showing any EMS. I've tried increasing it to maximum in the it.exe, the IT VDMS shortcut, the dosdrv.exe file, and the VDMSrun file in the VDMS directory. Nothing. It's still showing 0 EMS free and only 63K conventional.

Any ideas?

OUCH, the dreaded EMS problem. Time someone actually called the doofuses in Redmond, WA. See the "Cannot enable EMS under Win2K..." thread for details. What probably happened is that a different driver (video, SCSI, RAID?) version from the one you had before the crash has been installed.

I'm going to start making those computer information fields when you sign up mandatory if people don't begin filling them out. Come on, people. We can't do anything to help you if we don't know what your system is like!

Yes, it’s my fault.

Doh! I apologize... here it is:

Spacewalker Shuttle AK35GT
Athlon XP 1800+
256 DDR
Abit Siluro GeForce2 MX 400 64 MB
Motherboard built-in C-Media sound card
XP
Impulse Tracker 2.14

That should cover everything needed for IT.

Also, I reinstalled both IT and VDMSound. I'll check out the thread.

The single most annoying thing about IT is that it can't use XMS memory. You'd think that a program still being developed in 1999 would be smart enough to use XMS, but nooo! </rant>

Yes, it’s my fault.

I hear ya. 😉 I wish Lim would make an updated version! It was the greatest tracker ever made.

Someone needs to release a new tracker format. No, seriously. These are all getting outdated, with their memory restrictions and lack of effects and stuff. Let's see a new format!

Anyway, ModPlug Tracker works quite well, and it's in Windows. It has some pretty nifty stuff, and, while it doesn't have the same look and feel as Impulse Tracker, you'll get used to it. (You can use samples from SoundFonts, which, while some trackers think this sucks, I think it's pretty r0x0ring.)

Yes, it’s my fault.

Yeah, I think it's getting to the point where this is the only option. I went through the thread vladr gave me about the guy with the EMS problem. I'm fairly into the technical aspects of computing, but when you have to start figuring out the frame or memory address or whatever it is to use to get EMS to work, it's going to far for me. I just want to track! I remember a few years ago I had this same problem when running 98, and I don't think I got it to work then.

For the heck of it I sent a message to Lim asking him if he will ever make an XP-compatible update. I'll let you know if he replies. 😀

It was just really sad that I had it working for a few days there and then I had to replace the computer and lost it.

Yeah, that sucks. But ModPlug Tracker does have some excellent features that IT doesn't. Nothing profound, of course, but extremely useful, nevertheless.

Be sure to send us your new tracks! 😀

Yes, it’s my fault.

Jeffery Lim wont do any updates for Impulse Tracker. Though the unreal64 team have been developing Impulse Tracker 3 for some years now, it will be a multiplatform application.

I've been encouraging people to do this (NStriker, etc.) ever since it popped up. Please, people, when we run into brick walls like this, spend the money, talk to Tech Support at Microsoft, your motherboard manufacturer, etc. so we can find out the issue!

Hmmm, Stiletto?! bingo!
No, that can't be! 😉

The IT3 website is remarkably lacking in, err, information about IT3.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Yep, there was more info about it on the old pages, hopefully soon there will be more info again...

😠 I'm sure there is some possibility to get IT work under XP. Absolutely don't know what to do without it.... it's my drug......
I do not expect to get any other OS working easily on my new Notebook and I have to use VDMSound to emulate SB16, since it has only the AC97 Codec Sound installed.
It's so frustating.... I can get IT work with poor 8bit mono sound using something like a bootdisk, or by using clear VDMSound Emulation, but without any EMS memory...
What about... something like a bootable CDROM/DVD with some bare XP System on it (is that possible?) - just running VDMSound, maybe there is a chance that the ems prob suddenly vanishes...🙄
is there any Soundcard emulator (supporting SB16!) for DOS, so that I'd be able to use EMS Memory???

Your EMS problem has nothing to do with VDMSound, it's a hardware configuration issue that won't show up in Device Manager (there is a "Win2k and EMS" or something like that thread here, read it for more details). Quick alternatives would be DosBox, VirtualPC, VmWare.

yes, I know. I've read the thread (no-not the whole;) ). I 've been talking about using plain DOS - no xp - to get around the ems problem (but in this case, I'd have to emulate a SB16 soundcard, is that possible - in DOS?).
I've been trying VirtualPc before, it really runs well, but the SB16 Sound Emulation was kind of croppy(?), but I'll give it a try again on my new system. Unfortunately, IT does not run with DOSbox - also SB16 is not emulated there until now... 🙁

Sound Card
AC97

Yes, but it could be tricky. Stiletto posted a list of DOS drivers for AC '97 chipsets in the VDMSound development forum but I don't know if your chipset is covered or not.

My old motherboard had an AC97 and it worked for me. This new C-Media one won't work. ARGH!!!!

We need to petition Jeff Lim and get him to make an XP version of IT! 😁
