Hi, all ! I began to collect vintage computers and all that time paid most of attention to 286-P1 systems. Now I feel some nostalgia for Pii-Piii era games. I have a Dell tower with PII-400. 256 of RAM and a RIVA TNT 16 mb AGP card. It runs Quake II and Red Baron II well, but my one once favorite Midtown Madness 1 - sometimes works slow, when too much objects on screen, almost unplayable ((( ... Can a better AGP card be a solution for that system ? Like which one... ? The games i like to play on it are Nox, Revenant, Unreal, Hexen II, Jedi Knight i & II, X-Wing Alliance and, the Rogue Squadron )... Also I have an Asus P3bf mb and some 450-550mhz PIII CPU's for it stored in the attics) And along with it I have a Blue&White G4 AGP MAcintosh to compare it with the PC's of the era, with OS's 9.22, X10.3 X10.4 but I haven't played games on it yet - and that's a different story)

Probably a Voodoo3 would be ideal for that system. What type of AGP slot? Universal or 3.3v?

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

PII covers a 3 year period between 1997-1999; the TNT is an OK companion to a low speed PII chip like the 266 or 300 (I prefer a G200+Voodoo2 instead), but you have a 450MHz PII, and most of the games you declare interest in are 1998/99 titles. You are definitely better served with going for a card that would pair better with a late PII or early PIII CPU. Judging by your games and current card I don't think you are really interested in glide backwards compatibility so I'd say you can go for a GeForce 256 (1999) and call it a day. If it's hard to find (it seems to be) then you can just get a GeForce 2 MX 400 (2000) which should have relatively comparable. Personally, I'd go for the Voodoo 3 3000 but in this case it doesn't seem to be the best idea.

It's of course depends on what you want to do with it and personal taste, but for any given PII / III class machine, I think Geforce 2/3/4 (any kind) is almost always a safe bet.
