Of course. the reason of using a via chipset is mainly, as everybody knows, because of the native ISA support (most important thing I'm looking for), Pentium Tualatin and PC133 sdram support with ATA-100 IDE controller, besides, VIA normally has a great dos compatibility, and I really don't enjoy the slot1 Pentium 2 quite much. But since I've never used a 694T motherboard (exactly the Iwill VX133U) before, I hope to get some help from any experienced dos gamer here.
1. Could the ISA soundcard (especially AWE64 gold) work perfectly on a VIA's 694t chipset? I know some boards have ISA slots but lack of some main features heavily used by a ISA soundcard, so I worry about its ISA compatibility, and usually VIA chipsets got some issues on the hardware compatibility under win 9x...
2. I wish to use a socket 370 coppermine cored Pentium III 533/600 mhz with 133Mhz FSB, so that I can lower its FSB to 66mhz, in order to obtain a 266/300 MHz CPU which I think will be a well performanced under DOS just like K6-2+ or K6-IIi+, and if I disable its L1 and /or L2 cache, I think it still could be somehow useful for 386 or 486 games (even the frequency is little bit higher than a Pentium MMX 233). But all these are just nothing more than my thoughts in theory. So could some experienced one tell me it is possible or not?
3. What about the memory? For win9x, 128MB or 256 MB are the better choices for sure, but only up to 64MB ram could be used by the MS DOS 6.22, and some games will even suffer problems when more than 16MB are used...
4. For the graphic card, I would like to choose a voodoo 3 3000 probably, for its great 2D quality and excellent compatibility for both dos and windows 9x (for those few incompatible dos games, I would run them in DOSBOX). But the CPU is not so powerful even in its full speed, may that CPU be the bottleneck for the whole system?
5. I'm thinking of using a Tualatin (1.2Ghz~1.4Ghz) with a AWE64 Gold and a MX 300 too. But I've never run any dos games with a such high frequency CPU before. I think this really will be something quite challenging for a dos gamer. So any one here used to do such thing before?
Need help on these issues. Thanks for help!! 😀 😀 😀
