is there any documents or threads with tips on how to accomplish a working CD-rom on a vintage system???

i think my only option is to try to get it working with an AWE-32 at this point..
is it even possible to write a guide? or is there jsut too many variables at play? re: different hardware
perhaps a specific guide on how to get cd working with awe-32??

Hi, AWE32 should have an IDE interface.
A generic ATAPI CD-ROM driver, such as oakcdrom.sys or vide-cdd.sys should do.
If vide-cdd.sys is in c:\DOS, just add these lines:

[config.sys]
DEVICE=C:\DOS\VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001

[autoexec.bat]
MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /L:D
