Well i bought my Compaq LTE5300 and it came with a dead cmos battery, it is dead but thankfully it not leaked, so i need to replace it, any rechargable NiCd 4.8V battery that fits the laptop should work right?
Even if the connector doesn't match i can still cut the cable join the new battery with the old wires and connectors.

Yes. NiMH should also be viable as long as the board isn't overly picky, but Li-Ion and LiPo are not due to vastly different characteristics.

Yes lipo require a lot of care and protection circuits, well i found one cell on AAA size with 4.8v with terminals ready to solder, so i will reuse the wire and connector.
I wish i could restore the battery pack since i got only the shell of the battery pack but i guess this isnt a priority since i dont have plans to use this laptop when no mains voltage is available.
Thank you for answering.

No, you can not just replace a NiCd battery with a NiMH one. A charging circuit for a NiCd battery is not suitable for a NiMH battery. It would be constantly charged and would start to overheat/leak very fast.

Indeed i did some research, in some cases where the NiMH would not be charged all the time it would kind of work, but here in my country it is really easy and cheap find a NiCd on AAA size so i will go on the safe side.

It would have to be tested to ensure max charge current isn't excessive and charge current when full is at trickle levels. As time to charge isn't critical, a little added series impedance would probably suffice.
