Hi,

Im running TR 1 on a dual celly with XP under GLidos. And that works great as far as graphics go. Point is, I cant seem to get the in game sounds going. Sometimes I hear sound during the movies (mainly the intro, which I cand dream by now), but never in-game.

As the soundcards goes, its a Creative Soundblaster 128 PCI ( you know, the cheapest available).

Anyone of you available giving tips, hints and what have you, will be dearly appreciated.

(It has been to long since Ive played this little gem)

Try using the VESA emulation mode that Paul has built-in and see if that fixes it. Also, try running something else (like Impulse Tracker) with VDMS and see if that works.

Finally, be sure to have update1.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Try minimizing your SoundBlaster settings (choose the most basic SoundBlaster, not Pro or 16). Also, were you able to run this in software mode with sound? (with the proper executable, of course).

Mr. Unregistered :

In case you didn't sort it out yet.
Take note that TR 1 sound is actually the outcome of a 'concerto' played by two components : the 'noise' i.e shots, steps, Lara's voice etc. and the 'soundtrack' music from the title's theme to all the tunes, the secret areas' chime, gusts of wind etc.
Noise requires that a compatible soundcard is identified with the right settings.
Music is just cdaudio tracks replaying.

This scheme also applies to TR 1 Gold aka Unfinished Business, and partially to TR 2 & 2 Gold as well, but the last two are usually WinXP-compatibile anyway. You need mind your cdrom drives' letter choice in all these cases to be sure.

So talking about what I called 'noise', under WinXP you don't really need any particular soundcard, actually you need no soundcard at all, because you can rely upon VDMSound to emulate it for you.
Btw, VDMSound 2.0.4 worked fine for me long before the update.
For 'music' Glidos (v. => 1.10 required) comes in handy.
This was aimed to enhance TR 1 graphics to begin with, of course, but as of v. 1.10, P. Gardiner was able to bypass a sort of mscdexnt bug which until then prevented the complete recreation of the whole TR gameplay experience. We used to have a WinXP\Glidos good TR 1 visual perception plus the 'noise' and finally the soundtrack was playing again.

Another workaround for you could well be creating a dos 7, or fake dos 7, environment via a Win9x EBD so that, once all your cdrom and Soundblaster 128 PCI drivers (for dos) are installed by it, you would be able to play TR 1 with music again.
But then I guess you'd be missing the great visual TR 2\3-like quality Glidos provides...

To conclude, what I would do is :
#1 check that VDMSound is up and running for you
#2 don't hesitate to erase whatever TR1 files are left on your HD (if you lose your savegames you can always grab some from the great online savegame library at Stella's site or among those in the saves collection J. Reid created).
#3 reinstall TR1 together with VDMSound and Glidos and I see no reason why you should fail.

If I can help with more info, you only have to ask as I've been through all this mess before 😉
