I have played with my Gigabyte GA-686 DLX (Intel 82443LX) board from this thread...

...and tried some Pentium IIIs in it to get a higher speed. They are all detected, but the BIOS stops before the CPU-ID is displayed.

With P2:

With P3:

As I already have the most up to date BIOS revision I assume there is not much I can do to get this running?

But: I have read that the LX chipset doesnt support a P3 at all. But the BIOS detects the CPU correctly.

So what can be the reason it doesnt boot?

I'm running a P3/550 on an Asus P2L97-S, it seems to work fine. (Of course it doesn't support 100MHz FSB so I'm running it at 5.5x75=412.) It was a bit finicky getting it to go (may have just been crusty contacts or something), but after a few tries I got it working & I've been running it ever since. Make sure the CPU runs at a voltage your board can supply.

Check if some modded bios for your mobo exists

Can you enter setup with the PIII ? Have you checked for an option like "Halt on..." and set it to "No errors" ?

Therefore it should work in theory?

Honestly, I am not 100% sure if the CPUs I tested are 100% OK or compatible. They are without plastic case and seem to be some OEM equipment. Maybe this is a cause...

No, I cannot do anything when a P3 is inserted. I also dont think another BIOS is available.

Just to be sure, which Pentium 3s are you testing with?
LX may support Katmais, though this is more a matter of the board and not just the chipset.

I have tried these (and identical ones):

The top one boots at 500 MHz ("PB 746509-001").

The bottom one at 300 MHz ("PB 720885-001").

Tried with a cooler installed of course. Should be Katmai, but difficult to find further data.

So it actually can boot with Coppermine. Interesting.

Try to find some way or crippling the fsb to 66 through 83mhz then maybe it will work.

I can boot a PIII "Korean Tualatin" 1,4GHz on my Abit LX6 using a MSI MS-6905 Sloket, the board runs the CPU at 1,5V configured by the adapter.
