Hi everyone,

In the past I have bought dubious PCs that have evidently just been pulled out of the attic (or worse) and are going cheap on second hand websites. Some people spend hundreds on one specific piece of hardware (and take it very seriously), I'm the opposite of that and spend pennies and I get great enjoyment from trying to gauge what sort of hardware these PCs have from the grainy pictures online and then popping them open when I get home to see what I got!

Anyway today's purchase was these two for £15.

This was an Athlon 2200+ on an ASROCK K7S8X AGPx8 1.5v with a grim cooler and grim MX440 64MB (not sure if 64 or 128bit). Not terribly exciting but the motherboard and CPU could make a good base as the caps are all in good condition. I might have a go at recording some PS2 footage with the "Life View" card. It's a Pal-I version, not sure that that means. Slightly interesting as I've had a few S478 boards recently so the Athlon made a nice change.

Not so bad actually

This had a QDI K7V8363A (K7E-A) with a Duron of some kind. It's got the VIA KT-133A with a universal AGP slot and an ISA slot. Might be interesting for a DOS PC?

First up was the later (top mounted) MSI case getting a clean - I'm going to bin the other case. This PC was by a OEM called ScottQ, maybe from Germany?

Ready to be installed when I can be arsed to dig out my decent 5V PSU

I'll probably run this as a slightly weird set up of W98SE, Athlon 2200+ with my nice cooler, 256/512MB DDR, GeForce 6600LE (lol), Live View card thing, SBLive or maybe just use the built in one.

Does anyone else get enjoyment from buying "mystery" cheap PCs like this?

Retro/mystery PCs available in my area for cheap... hah... best I can do is buy lots of stuff off of eBay and hope for the best.

I have gotten some really sweet hauls from eBay as well as from another site I found which shall remain unnamed because I hope to get more stuff from the same site at some point in the future.

In my area, people want stupid high prices for junk on Craigslist and there really isn't any other local site for me to look for stuff.

The last local computer recycler I could get stuff from shut down last year and I know of no other local places that even carry older PC hardware.

Somehow I feel like you are insulting retro PCs when you compare them to loot boxes 😜
Loot boxes are probably the worst thing ever invented in games. I hope they get banned as soon as possible.

Getting them to operate 100% without a crash is the Dark Souls of PC building.

I used to like this back in the early/mid 2000's. Hardware was much more interesting then and more important I had plenty of space!
I still like the idea of it. Opening it to find out what's inside, cleaning up and upgrading some old unloved PC, or in the worst cases saving good parts from death.

But I don't go out and buy PC's any more, I will save the very occasional PC on the side of the street or similar though.

Just playing Dark Souls would be cheaper in the long run.

Maybe we should equate it more to playing ZORK. One time I actually killed the thief. Thought he was dead for good. Then a few moves later he came back and killed me... GRRRRRR.

I'm hopelessly addicted to picking up retro PCs. 😜

Life isn't long enough to re-enable every hidden option in every BIOS on every board... 🙁
