Installed all the necessary stuff but when I try to run Age of Rifles with VMDS the program is looking for the CD in drive A (not D) - any idea how I can override this???

Haven't heard of a CD game looking for A:
I presume you tried "Enable low-level CD-ROM support (MSCDEX)"? on the VDMSound shortcut's properties.

BTW, can you please tell us your system specs? That has a direct effect on the way some titles respond.

OS, CPU, RAM,etc...

Ah-ha!

http://www.ssionline.com/support/01.html

"Specific Problems: (CD ROM)

If you get the message, "Can't Access CD-ROM" you will probably need to upgrade your version of MSCDEX. Age of Rifles won't run with any version older than 2.22."

You MAY need to use SAPUCDEX to fool the version number checking, but there still may be unimplemented functions in SAPUCDEX.

Also note this thread: http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=8j2vk8%2 … ews.prodigy.com

"AOR freaks over D&E being CD drives, so go into config.sys and add the following line lastdrive=d, then restart the computer. The computer & AOR think there is only one CD reader and the sound comes back. The negative is that windows 98 will ignore the E drive also, so when your through playing AOR just go back into the config.sys and either put rem in front of the last drive command or simply remove it then save & reboot."

The LASTDRIVE command SHOULD work in CONFIG.NT or CONFIG.VDMS. I think. But I think it would be ignored. Hm...

You beat me to it. This page had an un-official 1.43 patch

Still looking...

Link works fine here! Seems to be the only location, too.
ftp://ftp.militarygameronline.com/pub/AgeofRi … 3_universal.zip

Note that there's no README, so I'll just copy&paste what Norm wrote:

"I believe this should work properly if simply unzipped to an AoR directory. The SSI instructions for installing and running the game are, well, not entirely accurate... Among other things, they specify a DOS session for the game and installation - an unnecessary complication that I've never even tried with AoR (It was designed from the start to run from a Win95 desktop icon, which is how it works best)."

It's funny, though, Mr. Kroger doesn't mention this patch on his page: http://home.austin.rr.com/normkoger/aor.html

It's funny, additionally, that I didn't realize he was a programmer for Strategic Simulations, Inc. until now. 😀

It still doesn't mean my advice won't apply, though. (rather, the advice I copied from elsewhere).

Mozilla 1.01 reports: "530 Sorry, no ANONYMOUS access allowed". IE v6 reports "The page cannot be displayed". IE 5.5 seems to work. If he has IE 5.5, it should work.

Historical moment everyone. There's a programmer that Stiletto hasn't emailed/petitioned/personally had a chat with... Write it down, you'll be talking about this to your grandkids someday.

We should add that the reason this is needed is because NT's version of "MSCDEX" is interpreted as an earlier version of the DOS MSCDEX, which causes these programs to break.

I know that was posted elsewhere, but Steve H. might've missed it.

...applied the 1.4 patch, still no joy... it seems to be something in VDMSound - when I try to start the program without it looks for the CD in the D drive, when I try it with VDMSound it goes looking in A... I'm stumped....

Nicht -- Moz 1.2b worked fine. You probably just hit it while it was down/busy.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Same here. Might need to ask Vlad as he's the actual programmer. I've never heard of this "A-Drive" issue before this.

In the meantime you might try the "ripped" version at underdogs.org (under "Wargame Construction Set 3"). Main downside of that version is it won't have any of the background CD-music of the original.

No, it's probably because I was using the non-beta 1.01. I'll leave the betas for other people to test out.

Steve, Vlad is all around us. Vlad is the unholy god of VDMSound. He is here, if you call out, and let him receive you...

Well, his email address is on the homepage for VDMSound and in VDMSound's documentation. But in any case his email is ntvdm@hotmail.com.

If you were registered, you could also contact him using the board tools.

Difference between "Run with VDMS" and plain DOS box is that , in VDMSound, EMS is enabled and CD-ROM support is disabled. So, in LaunchPad disable EMS and enable CD-ROM support.
