What are the best IRQ and DMA and memory settings for hardware in DOS and Windows ?
Is there a known list of recommendations ?

Holy cow what is your aversion to pertinent details? What hardware? What Windows?

Maybe this is of interest? http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
Maybe not!
Life? Don't talk to me about life.
Any configuration that does not share IRQs or DMAs will be fine.

Hi, I'd go with the default settings, since some applications are hard-coded to them.
Here you find the standard resources (IRQ/DMA etc.) of the PC/AT architecture.

In case of Sound Blasters, the defaults are:
IRQ7, DMA1, HIGH DMA5, Port 220h;
IRQ5 is often used in ATs, too, but never in XTs (since IRQ5 used by HDD).
IRQ7 is more compatible, since some games were hard-coded to that (Prince of Persia ?)
MPU-401 (MIDI): IRQ2/9, Port 330h for MT-32 (or GM), Port 300h for General MIDI
SB-MIDI: Port 220h (the default address of Sound Blaster DSP)
AdLib Port 388/389h
GamePort: Port 201h
Edit: Typos fixed.

Early Sound Blasters did indeed have IRQ7 as default factory configuration.
I believe however that somewhere during the lifetime of the Sound Blaster Pro 2, the default was changed to IRQ5.
I've seen many SB Pro 2 and later cards (SB16 etc) configured to IRQ5, so I believe they came factory-configured that way.
But indeed, some early SB software is hardcoded to IRQ7, so that is the most compatible option.
