I have a Trio64V+ which is almost identical with this one pictured on vogonswiki
https://www.vogonswiki.com/images/0/03/S3_Trio64V%2B.jpg
And by almost identical I mean down to the missing extra memory chips. 😀
The main difference in my case is that none of the memory chips are soldered, the card has 4 sockets of which 2 are populated. In fact it's essentialy the same as this other card http://pcrebuilding.altervista.org/images/res … 36_p1240864.jpg but with 86c765 video chip instead of 86c767, and 2 of the sockets unpopulated.
The chips in the 2 populated sockets are 256kx16 DRAM, 50ns, FPM V53C16256HK50. I want to populate the other 2 empty sockets so I can have in WinNT4 the desktop at 1024x768 in 65k colors instead of 256 colors.
I found the same chips on ebay but they're a bit on the expensive side. I found also much cheaper chips which are pin-compatible, same organization 256kx16, same speed 50ns but they're EDO not FPM, MT4C16270DJ-5. (by less expensive I mean I can get 8 of them for less than 2 of the correct ones)
Now AFAIK EDO is "tweaked" FPM which allows for faster chaining of read cycles. IMO it should work fine as standard FPM also. I think that replacing all chips on this card with EDO chips should work. Do you think it will work?
I/O, I/O,
It's off to disk I go,
With a bit and a byte
And a read and a write,
I/O, I/O
