Well, I recently installed VDMSOUND 2.1.0 beta, and since, the sound and music always completely stops after playing MOO2 (patched to version 1.31) a bit (seems to occur when it is supposed to change to another tune). Before installing VDSMsound 2.1.0, I used 2.0.4 (I uninstalled it manually first) and that version did not have that problem, but instead had a problem where the music and sound would stutter occasionaly for a short period.
The sound stutter also happened with ascendancy, I have not yet tried that one with 2.1.0 though...

There was a slight problem when installing VDMSound, the Launchpad.dll could not be removed when I tried to delete it, and during install it could not be copied over. Perhaps that has something to do with it?

512 Mb RAM
