I have been playing HL Blue Shift on a Voodoo5 (factory settings) and 19" LCD and have noticed something strange.

Basically the overall environment is very grey, but with certain red color aspects, such as the railing next to walk ways.

What I notice is that anything red leaves very noticeable streaks as I move it in my field of vision, e.g. if I turn my head left (in the game that is), the object appears to move right, leaving a red trail behind it to the left.

No other color object in the game does this, only red.

Is it the LCD...the saturated red pixels not switching to grey fast enough (grey is always the background color)? Or the V5? I have tried everything from vertical sync to triple buffering to AA but nothing changes.

It does not make the game unplayable but is somewhat annoying.

The LCD claims to be running at 75hz...the frame rate was definitely less than that when I bumped up AA to 4x...so if the monitor can redraw the screen faster than the card updating the buffer...

Or is it just my eyes perceiving motion blur and the red saturates my visual perception system?

You sure it's not the screen filter feature that comes standard with all 3dfx hardware?
Here's an extreme example

Don't think so. Here is a video...I'll leave up for 24hr. The best way is to focus on one of the red bars, and as it moves across the screen, e.g. from left to right, notice the red streak left behind to the left. It doesn't last very long and sort of jumps around, but you can still see it clearly.

Acer AL1913. Native 1280x1024. HL set to 1280x960 (highest mode), default OpenGL driver. It happens in all other resolutions as well down to 640x480.

That looks like lack of overdrive to me on the LCD in combination with really slow pixel response times.

Take a screenshot of the game in this area, then open the screenshot in an image viewer and move the viewer application around on the desktop. You should see the same amount of blur on those red pixels.

OK so I tried with a third 19" monitor, this time a BENQ...and it has gone away completely! Which is nice.
