Quite like the idea of the Bought these (retro) hardware today thread, I couldn't spot the equivalent in the software section so I thought I'd start one.

Whilst I'm sure many have copies of Windows 3.11 on floppy disk, I'm curious to see what people have got hidden away or what retro software people try to get their hands on,

Quite a while ago I started a collection of genuine Microsoft software. Like everything else at auction, now and then you can pick up the odd item for next to nothing when it usually has a high starting price or quite a bit of interest.

Picked these up a while back, Microsoft Office for Windows 95 on floppy disk. Well 24 floppy disks to be exact!

Haha witty. Did see a similar 5.25" version of that floating around somewhere.

We joke now but it's not until you end up refurbishing an old Laptop with only a floppy drive and spend the afternoon feeding floppy disks in, starting out feeling all nostalgic, then realising how painstaking it was do you really appreciate the modern day and the simplicity of the Win7 install.

Can't be bothered to take pictures, but as part of a massive haul of hardware two months back I also got a pile of original software. Things like:

- MS-DOS 5.0
- MS-DOS 6.22 Upgrade
- Spinrite II
- Xerox Ventura Publisher

Only one I've tried out is Spinrite - its original floppies are still in perfect shape and did full diagnostics on an MFM drive I wanted to check up.

Depends on how far back you want to go. Everything for my Philips G7000 is original (quite simply because copying cartridges is way too much hassle). The lions share of the software for my Amstrad CPC is original. For the PC, OS wise the earliest would be IBM PC-DOS 3.3 as for office software... not sure TBH possibly MS-Works 2 for DOS.

On the subject of the CPC, you think installing Windows 10 from floppy is a pain try install XP on a CPC from tape!

^You made my day! 😁

(Ironically though, there's SymbOS, which is a real OS with a Windows-like GUI)

Some originals that I have got that are special to me (incomplete list):
- Norton Commander
- Star Flight, Wonderland
- MOD4WIN
- AutoSketch 3, Animator Pro
- Central Point PC Tools
- Windows 2, WfW CD-ROM
- Star Trek 25th Anniversary, ST:TNG A Final Unity, Descent,
- Visual Basic 1, QuickBasic 4.5, Turbo Pascal 6, TPW

Quite a good idea to make software counterpart of Bought these (retro) hardware today topic.
Well, today I've finally got my recovery set for IBM PC Series. This recovery set is for Select-a-System configuration of 1995 models, the ones with Windows 3.1 - OS/2 Warp dual-boot.

All kinds really. Boxed NT 3.51, 4.0, WFW Upgrade, XTREE versions for DOS and Windows, Desqview/X 1 and 2 , Microsoft C++, Microsoft Professional Basic, Visual basic 3 and 4, PCTools for DOS, All the Norton Desktops, Norton Utilities DOS, OS/2 from 1.1EE up to Warp 4, and tons more. I also have a ton of loose disks and manuals. Have a nice collection of boxed and loose Mac apps from the 68k era to PPC. Shelf full of boxed Amiga games.

A hardware collection is nothing with the software.
