I've been trying to run Rama for days now-I know it may be hopeless at this point-but I have Dos box-and I went through all the instructions-but Rama still won't run-I even downloaded the patches-and tried to install to XP's DOS emulator-no luck-am I totally without hope-

Don't expect to get much help since you didn't provide much info.
It may work with the latest SCUMMVM now that it officially supports Sierra SCI games.
Are you trying to run the DOS, or the Windows version?
How exactly are you trying to mount, install, and play it inside of DOSBox?
What errors are you seeing?
I've never played Rama myself.
It works fine for me. It seems to run perfect for me at around 20k cycles.
I've mounted the ISO images I made from the original disc and installed the game through dosbox. Then I run the command 'ramados'.
dosbox default settings, you can use aspect=true, actual screensize, autolock=false if you prefer, frameskip=1 to prevent video talk choppiness, ddraw or overlay work fine for output.
Thanks for the note about 20k cycles... I had let it stay auto but now I'm curious what cycles it's actually been running so nice at.
