I'm having some problems getting X-com Ufo Defense working on my xp machine. 🙁

It gets as far asking me where i want to place my first base then crashes back to desktop immediatly every time. Ive tried using DOS slowdown utilities (turbo) the performance options in VDMSound etc ....

I have the latest version of VDMSound and Athlon 1800 XP processor with 512 Meg of RAM.

Other people seem to have no problem with this game ... anyone able to give me any clue as to what could be going wrong? 🙁

Actually, short of using the Windows version of XCom I know no one who can run XCom 1 at all in 2K/XP. Even WITH the Windows version, it crashes from time to time. If anyone *IS* running with no problems (DOS or Win version) Please let us know how :->

That's odd, chanza hasn't mentioned any problems yet with his Windows version:
showthread.php?threadid=576

Of course, he didn't say which OS that was under. I'm assuming the same as his profile (Win2000 SP3).

I notice that it will just "drop to desktop" at varying times. This was true for both Win98SE and XP. Seems more stable on 98SE, but I prefer the MIDI on XP. I found no rhyme or reason except that if the same action kept causing a crash varying the action somewhat, would sometimes prevent it. That probably won't help for placing the 1st base, though.

The drop to desktop is exactly what I get with the windows version. The DOS version just crashes at base placement, though if I load a saved game I never made and go to Bases, I can get passed that part.... Until I need to do almost anything else 😜

X-Com 1 just dun like Windows 😒

Don't worry, it's a popular series. Someone will figure out how to fix the issue eventually. Perhaps some hacked patch, perhaps something with the ACT, who knows.

I've got a simmilar problem with TFTD.. X-com 2... it crashes cosistantly when inside a batttle scene top resons why it crashes:

1- player unit falls from upper level to lower level
2- computers move from upper to lower or lower to upper levels w/o the use of stairs (even homing rockets do this)
3- when ANYONE steps on a tile that was damaged by a roket or destroyed by a rocket
4- random places on upper levels that you can walk under when crossed

-Alll of which make the game drop to windows...

and the infamous (when u use an underwater tank thing. I froget the initials...) it crashes before it even loads..

but on a good note...

the sound works PERFECTLY.. (unless you lag the comp to make it playable)

Yeah, TFTD is a picky one. Only suggestion is: save often during battles, and when you see a crash restore one or two steps in the past and try something different (the crashes are very consistent -- and also get saved with the games -- once a certain condition has been triggered). Works for me, though it's a pain. Probably memory corruption.

Well, I've nearly got X-Com: Ufo Defense (Enemy Unknown) working. I'm running the original floppy version for DOS, which I got back in 1994. I'm surprised the disks are still working :}

Anyway, it's working pretty well. I got the Abandon Loader that the massively cool VladR [thanks for writing VDMS!] suggested on the VDMS site. Now it runs at a reasonable speed (on my 1ghz Athlon with 356 SDRAM and an SB Live 5.1 it runs acceptably with speed reduction at 42%) and I get the music. The only problem is with the sound (I know it's with the sound, because it only occurs when the sound is enabled. With sound enabled and music disabled, it doesn't happen). It plays the effects, but it also makes a constant, loud clicking-type sound that practically drowns out the music. Any ideas about the cause?

I tried the 1.4 patch, but it crashes out too much (especially in base placement), as y'all noted. The floppy version actually works smoothly for me, besides this sound issue.

I've had a similar problem with Discworld 2, which Vlad thought could be a DC bias adjustment problem, but I think that's rubbish. Still I don't know what causes it and DiskWriter didn't want to work.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Yes, I get that popping sound on my floppy version of X-COM UFO, but only during the alien engagement...I figure maybe it's a sound effect for the force field or ship engine. It doesn't drown out the music in my case. The 1.4 patch is erratic and constantly dumps my game to desktop as well.
