What reasons for not mixing?

I'd also mix...

Waverider:
- real OPL3
- full SBPro2 support
- bug-free UART MIDI
- decent-ish wavetable GM

I'd pair it with the CT3670 though:
- CQM (a plus if you already have OPL3 on the waverider)
- SB16 support
- quietest last-gen SB16/AWE stuff
- add SIMMs and you essentially have an AWE64

You avoid that by making sure one of the two is on very conventional settings (eg. A220 I5 D1 T4 P330) and that the SET BLASTER variable refers to that. That sort of routine tends to come from older software, so it would make sense to set the Waverider32 to these settings for SBPro2.0 support. The SB16/32/AWE64 could then go to A240 I3 D3 T6 P300 or similar. Most games that support SB16 and/or AWE will allow manual selection of settings.

I don't see the point in adding the CT3670 if you have a Waverider32 installed already. All you gain is SB16 support, which isn't such a big thing. Not for games that run on a P60 anyway.

You get CQM and you can play CQM and OPL3 together into a mixer which is something people do for a richer FM synthesis. Also by adding RAM you can use soundfonts.

If you want a period correct you probably want a card from 1993/94

I don't see a CT1600 (Sound Blaster Pro 2.0) on your list which is an obvious gap given how important this model is in the SB lineup 😀 This is what I would put in (+ perhaps a GUS).

From your list as I am not familiar with the clones I would use a SB16 model with genuine OPL3. AWE32/64 is IMHO too new for a P60 system. Perhaps the CT1740 if you can tolerate the noise?

Anything with the Crystal Semi chipset would be appropriate as well (avoid the Cx4235).

I would respectfully disagree, the SB Pro was released in 1990 and the Pentium 60 while techincally released in 1993 was still a hot product in 1994, when I remember PC Format raving at length about how smooth it was to play Wing Commander III on a Pentium and why everyone should sell their 486s. 3-4 years in those times is basically a generational leap. The SB Pro has little to offer a Pentium system; 1993 and onwards games often had much better music options than OPL3, CD-ROM audio and 'interactive movied' were around the corner. At the very least he should go with something that would offer clear 16-bit audio and decent MIDI functionality. I would probably recommend an AWE32 if you really want to stick with Creative but if you are openminded a Yamaha YMF71x , ESS Audiodrive or Crystal CS423x card would serve just fine for far less in my opinion.

I certainly agree. My Compaq P75 system was sold new in 1995 with OEM MSDos/Win3.1 bundle and a Windows 95 upgrade CD rom. Sound was built into the unit and a Red Hat 6.2 install picked it up no worries. Just been going through my pci bundle and found a Genius ISA sound card with a Crystel CS4235 chips et. If I'd known I had the card would've been fitted to a system years ago.

I have my SB Pro 2 running in a 386 PC.....so not an option right now.....

I am thinking the CT1740 as, honestly, maybe its cause I am older (40s) but I dont hear the noise and other things I read about with some cards.....I also dont see much difference in 720p and 4K TV in most cases..feel free to make fun and laugh, but the simple fact is I dont hear it / see it. Just want to have good compatibility for all the games of mid DOS era!

As long as it doesn't bother you, go with it. I was the same, completely happy with my CT2290 in many Pentium builds.. Then I put it in a 486 and it started crackling like mad. 😵 So the issue is less noticeable on later motherboards.

CT1740 does have some MIDI bugs though (slowing down music etc.) so for a Pentium class PC you will not have the optimum experience regardless. It's still a sub-optiomal choice if you want MIDI in your system.

Be aware some of the Crystal Cards have a really buggy OPL Variant.

A really cool Card for such a Build is also the Mozart with OTI Chip, it has Real OPL3 and nice Sound.
Much better then the Creative Cards..
