For the sound: you have two options in VDMSound; if it's the sound card drivers' fault then you have to increase buffering from 75ms or so to probably 750ms or 500ms. If it's the game asking for "too much attention" then you have to decrease the min/maxDMAPeriod pair from 5/15 to, say, 2/10 or 2/5. Also make sure debug logging is disabled.
