This weekend, I took my 1998 HP Pavilion 6370Z and heavily customized it for use as an overpowered Windows 3.1 PC. I have 486 machines already, but those are Compaq Presario 425 all-in one computers with no CD drives. Not only did I want a CD drive for easily copying data with rewritable discs, but also a machine with PCI slots for an ethernet card and video card. A Pentium II PC with 128 MB of RAM, 3.2 GB HDD (2GB partition for WFW/DOS), ATI 3D Xpressions, Sound Blaster 2.0, and a 24x Creative CD drive for Windows For Workgroups 3.11 is pretty awesome and I've been having a lot of fun browsing the web in IE5 and chatting on AIM 😁

However, I noticed some strange file behavior immediately after installing Windows For Workgroups. Several system files keep duplicating themselves with a ".e00" file extension. If I delete them, they just come back the next time I start Windows (at least I think that's when it happens). If I don't delete them, the same files continue duplicating as ".e01", "e02", and so on. These files include autoexec.bat, config.sys, win.ini, and many others. Does anyone know why this is happening and if it's something I can disable? I seem to remember something like this happening on one of my Presario 425's with Windows 3.1 awhile back, but I can't remember if I ever figured out the cause.
