help i have windows xp home i have the vdms sound thingy i played with vdms and i still get the black screen
Get "Update 1" for VDMSound 2.0.4 from http://vdmsound.sourceforge.net/files/ and unzip into the VDMSound installation directory (overwrite when prompted). Do you still get a black screen once "Update 1" is installed or not?
Also, are you using LaunchPad or not? If you have Launchpad installed then please try to run the game *with* "Update 1" but *without* LaunchPad.

The same place as his link for Update1. BTW, you never mentioned which version of MUGEN you're working with. Is it the utility that has a problem?, or a game based on the MUGEN tool?

It's in the first reply by VladR.
Here it is again:
http://vdmsound.sourceforge.net/files/
or more specifically:
http://vdmsound.sourceforge.net/files/VDMSLau … ad.v1.0.0.7.zip
v1.0.0.2 is also there, but obviously there's no point in using an older version.
Ok. I have to admit, I forgot the first rule of troubleshooting VDMSound.
1) Make sure the program runs properly without it first.
Obviously that means silence (except sometimes, for XP owners), but if it's crashing, locking up, or doing any other nasty deed VDMSound's not going to fix that.
I found the 2001.04.14 version of MUGEN.
Woof. This isn't a program for the novice. It's extremely flexible in configuration, but the majority of that configuration must be done by you, and this presumes you understand the tech behind it.
Also, it's a Beta, and an "expired" Beta at that. This doesn't encourage me.
Your problem is right at the start. You get a "Blank Screen".
In the FAQ, which is included with MUGEN, you'll see:
"When I try to run MUGEN, all I see is a blank screen, or I see messed-up colors, or my computer just crashes. What can I do?"
Most likely your video card is not fully VESA compliant. Try obtaining
a VESA driver (*Note Changing Video Modes::, for more information).
Please do not contact us for help regarding VESA drivers.
We might be able to narrow down the video issue, but you'll need to give us an idea of your system specs. Specifically, in this case, your video card. This by the way is why there is a:
"Important: Follow These Guidelines When Submitting Help Requests"
at the top of each forum.
It saves time from asking "20 questions" back and forth.
For more specifics on configuration, unless we have a MUGEN expert on the board, you'll probably need to go to
http://www.mugenguild.cjb.net/
..or someplace like it. They have a "Newbies fast start" section under MUGEN on the left column, with a discussion board dedicated to MUGEN.
Just for the heck of it, try pressing Y when the blank screen comes up. It might not be able to start a 320x240x16 screen (my GeForce 3 can't), it then asks if you want to try 640x480x16. The message might be there and you just can't see it.
I coulda sworn I had answered a thread on MUGEN months ago. Maybe it was on the other, old, board.
[EDIT] Yup. Here we go:

MUGEN is well-known in the emulation community. It is a 2D fighting game engine. People can use either the default characters it comes with, or download sprite rips from their favorite arcade and console fighters. Want to do DragonBall Z versus Pokemon? (And Capcom hasn't done it yet?) Now you can!
Their homepage is here: http://mugen.elecbyte.com
The fact that this guy stated he wants to run MUGEN on Windows XP Pro means that he is using an older version of MUGEN for DOS (no longer available from their homepage). MUGEN is currently being developed for Linux, and they are supposedly working on porting it to Windows eventually.

Here's a good download page for old versions of MUGEN.A nice Brasilian MUGEN fan site is here: http://www.mgbr.net/
A good, active MUGEN development forum.
http://pub24.ezboard.com/bmugendevforumThere's a similar engine out there for Windows, I think, called KOF'91. (http://www.kof91.com) But MUGEN has more fan support at the moment.
There's another one out there called Fighter Maker 95 (I think) but I can't find the homepage. AFAIK Fighter Maker 95 is a commercial product, tho. Unlike MUGEN or KOF91. Here's a place to download it, maybe. http://www.kissdbz.net/fm95utilities.shtml
I wonder if any of the MUGEN fans have tried a CYGWIN-compile of the MUGEN Linux version that's out... anyhow, we're willing to help on this, provided this guy provides more info.

Cygwin won't display anything more than text mode or make sound more than PC speaker, will it?
Yes, it’s my fault.

...unless you use SDL (or Allegro, etc.) as well. 😉

How exactly would I do that?
Yes, it’s my fault.
What sound & graphics library does the Linux version use? SDL/ Allegro? Or "proprietary" (hehe...) *nix stuff (Opensound, XWin/framebuffer, etc)?

How MUGEN?
----------
MUGEN is being developed in C using Allegro. It is being compiled
with gcc 2.95.2 and linked with Allegro 4.0.0.
If that's all it is, hell, making a MinGW port, let alone a Cygwin port, should be simple as pie. I wonder if anyone has done it yet.
[EDIT]
Sorry, I was just assuming they gave out their source:
From the FAQ:
Will you release the source code for MUGEN?
The source for MUGEN is not available for public download. The file formats for .sff, .snd and .fnt are published on our website.
...too bad. You still might be able to run it, somehow. I'm not sure how you could run the Linux version in Windows, though. So we may yet need to get the DOS version working. 🙁
