I bought a new 16x10 (1920x1200) monitor (Acer VW257).
For DVI/HDMI input from an FX 5900 I use an EDID emulator to force 1600x1200 in 4x3 aspect ratio at 60Hz .
VGA input (for my Voodoo 3) is where I have a problem . The monitor has a an aspect ratio control that allows 4x3 aspect ratio (in HDMI and VGA). It works in every resolution I've tried EXCEPT 720x400 and 320x200 where it always stretches to full screen .
By coincidence, my Gefen VGA to DVI Scaler Plus decided to die (don't feel like re-capping it at this time) . The Gefen mostly worked the way I wanted except in its support for exotic x/y-modes and it's annoying splash screen on resolution change, so I'm not 100% set on just ordering another .
Any recommendations for a decent quality VGA to DVI/HDMI scaler with support for DOS VGA modes and configurable output resolution (with 1600x1200 as an option) in the 100 $US range would be welcome .
EDIT: I have already tried the Extron RGB-DVI 300 and was not impressed by its scaling quality.
EDIT2: Actually on the Extron RGB-DVI 300, only scaling quality of 70Hz input sucks . If you feed it 60Hz, it scales just fine .
EDIT3: The Extron RGB-DVI 300 is actually great, once you realize that you have to manually enter the number of total lines for non-VESA resolutions, such as 720x400 (auto-detection will not handle that on my unit at least) . That fixes the scaling and shimmering issues I was having .
I used the values here for 720x400 --> http://martin.hinner.info/vga/timing.html and now both 720x400 70Hz and 320x200 70Hz display fine .
Basically, that mean setting 726x404 active pixels and 900 total pixels and adjusting the rest for proper centering .
