two two-axis joysticks

hi there, i am trying to get running Sensible World Of Soccer CD on Windows XP SP1. I am using launchpad, i have downloaded the latest VDMSound and the VDMSound.2.0.4.update1 and installed. I am trying to achieve the two joystick support in this game. the problem is:

first joystick is calibrated fine...

second joystick is couldn't be calibrated
a) when i put the joystick to the upper left corner it shows good values (upper left)
b) in the center it shows good values (centre)
c) in lower right it shows bad values (almost same as upper left)
d) if i move the first joystick to the lower right, the second shows correct values when moved to lower right

i played a lot with the coordmin, coordmax, it's always same... any ideas both joysticks are connected to the creative labs soundblaster live value gameport via quadswitch as-a4 device, i also tried standard y-cable... the problems seems not to appear in the device test in the windows xp controllers control panel, but only in the game (installation program & ...) - i supplied the config program that fails at this url http://bubaq.wz.cz/2joys.zip [select config then control then 2 joysticks...]

any suggestions welcome (better drivers for gameport, some leak in vdm, bad controllers?)

is there a possibility to emulate keyboard by the second joystick? that could do the trick...

That's a weird one. First, are you running VDMSound 2.0.4 "plain" or "Update 1"?
I chekced the joystick code right now and it looks OK. Also, if the joystick calibrate fine in Windows then it's not the joystick drivers, but possibly either SWOS or VDMSound. Assume that the second joystick is calibrated, does the first one work in SWOS? (I'm asking because SWOS is the only game I've seen in which the joystick stops working as soon as you're past the intro).

Also, can someone else with two joysticks confirm the behaviour using the program attached above?

Cheers,
V.

Hi Vlad,

Edasx's suggestion is really great.
Do you think it is possible to emulate key strokes using joystick buttons?

I'm asking because many dos games only support two or four buttons, and that's a pain in flight simulators.

I'd love to get advantage of the ten buttons of my joystick in dos games, but with VDMSound I can use only two 🙁

Any hope?

Thank you,
regards.

There's third-party utilities out there that will do this. Of course, I can't find any right now *grumbles* damn Google...

I'll check my hard drive tonight, I know I used to have one...

Still, it would be a useful thing for VDMS, since I'm not sure how well these utilities would work in 2000/XP.

SaPu would probably be a good resource to contact about this. PSX emulators have controller plugins similar to this.

Yes, it’s my fault.

I am using the 2.0.4 update. The joysticks are working in the game, however there is still the problem i mentioned above

I actually found a piece of SW (that even worked in the XP) that translates the joystick movement to keystrokes... it's called JoyToKey. If you google it you get bunch of japanese/chinese shit... but i found few others but there were mainly DOS TSRs

Thanks for the links, edasx.

I've tried those 3 programs, but none of them works for me 🙁

My main problem is that X-Wing uses these three annoying keys: " [ ] \ " (the two square brackets and the backslash) to control the speed of the aircraft.

But, unfortunately, in my Spanish keyboard those three keys can only be obtained by pressing and holding the "RIGHT ALT" key and then pressing the corresponding key.

And all these programs seem to use only the "LEFT ALT" key, so I'm stuck 🙁

Is there any other possibility??

Thanks a million.
Cheers.

I'll email Aldo. He's a good friend of the emulation community. Maybe he'll have an idea, if he hasn't a utility already like this, of someone else's utility you could use.

And thanks, edasx, that's what I was thinking of.

I also have one called "KeyJoy" at home, I'll see if I can dig up more information on it and the other ones.

...

We've gone off-topic, anyhow. Does anyone here "own" SWOS and can help out edasx?

(BTW, great nickname! Up, Right, Left, Fire, Down, eh?)

Sorry Leolo. 🙁

This is what Aldo says. I don't think it's a good solution:

Your best solution is: Go to Control Panel -> Keyboard, select the Input Locales tab, then add the "English (United States)" keyboard layout.

Press the "Key Settings" button and select the shotcut to switch from one keyboard layout to another. When you have more than one layout, Shift+Alt will switch from one to the other.

But it might work. *shrug*

Hi Stiletto,

Unfortunately, the Alt-Shift combination doesn't work in X-Wing, although it DOES work in Windows programs.

So I'm afraid I have to go to control panel and change the keyboard language system-wide for the utilities to work.

Hey, but what the heck, it works! Maybe it's a bit cumbersome, but I don't mind it much.

Thanks a lot, now it's much nicer to play X-Wing with the thrust keys mapped to joystick buttons.

Kind regards.

Different paths to the same solution. 😀

I still hope someone can help you out, here... and eventually, I'd like to see a bette r solution to Leolo's problem.

I am having the exact same problem with NBA Live 95, i also have a SB LIVE value card with y-cable. Joystick 1 is fine, joy2 wont calibrate in the game even though its fine in windows. I'm going to try dos2key. any other suggestions? please help, does the patch to vdmsound help? i dont believe i have it yet.

Me too, same problem but the game is NHL 95. DOSBox doesn't find joystick 2 when I am using y-cable 🙁

Hi.
I also have a problem with SWOS and DosBox (0.62 and 0.63 versions tried): I have two USB joypad and they conflict: the second pad controls both joystick. I'm not able to resolve the problem using Joy2Key.

Well, I'm glad we've reached a consensus that there is a problem. 😀

Yes, it’s my fault.

It is possible to do that with DosBox 0.61 and JoyToKey.
As this DosBox version read only one joystick even if there are more joystick connected to PC, you can set the game to use joystick+keyboard, then use JoyToKey to emulate keyboard with second joystick, and no more conflict.
With version 0.62 and 0.63 it is not possible cause they read both joysticks.

Bye.
