Hey guys! Before I begin, I'll preface this by saying I'm new here. Don't worry, I don't intend to uhh "clog and dodge", as it were. As in, posting one "help me thread" never to be seen again. I was somewhat active in the Murray2 forums, but it looks like that shut down (RIP). Anyways, I'm at my wits end trying to get this hunk o' junk to work properly. For some context, I came into possession of an old Inteva PC some years ago. It has a K6 3/33 and 64mb of RAM, and by default came with windows 98SE. After a hard drive crash and recovery, I decided to reinstall 98.
Just one problem though- My old sound card, an ESS Audiodrive 1869F, stopped working. It'd only output midi sound on 330, despite being a SB16 (or is it pro?) clone. Obviously, it didn't go well. It used to default wavebank only which on its own sounds bad, and coupled with the fact that the card just can't output that many channels for it to work properly.
So, in my infinite wisdom, I decided to install Windows 95 OSR 2.5. However, upon installing drivers for it, it crashed, playing only the first note of the glorious win95 startup sound.
Queue numerous cycles of trying both over and over again, and I resolved to buy a new sound card. I settled on the Sound Blaster Live CT4670. It was cheap, and the feature of soundfonts certainly was tantalizing. However, upon getting everything installed in Windows 98, I was stuck with the same problem as the first time around- It used to godawful default soundbank again. That in mind, I went back to 95 only to have the same problems as I did with the Audiodrive.
Now, I feel I should clear this up before anyone else posts anything- I know for a FACT that the Audiodrive works, because when I installed 95 from 98 (Which I forgot how I pulled that off) it worked just fine. That setup had a lieu of other problems, but at the very least that's not the issue here. That leads me to believe the SB Live isn't the problem either.
Anyways, I hope you guys can help me figure this out. If not, god help me 🤣.
EDIT: BIG thanks to Grommit2007, who showed me the right drivers to use. Couldn't have done it without ya!
