Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help out with a problem with the sound in AS2 (Airline Simulator 2).

On running AS2, the sound is garbled - I can hear the sound but it has "pulses" in it, but when certain types of Sound are transmitted (i.e. the ATC voices), I just get totally garbled sound running in a kind of cycle that lasts 3 to 4 seconds.

The problem happens every time I run the program. I have been exchanging messages with the Developer Simon Hradecky and tried many things, including taking out my Audigy card and reverting to the on board AC97 sound, but the problem still remains. I have also tried lots of settings of VDMSound and also my sound card.

When I run the program with the error log enabled, I get a huge file full of warnings "DMA Updates too infrequent", and I never once see the message "DMA Transfer Paused", like I do for example if running PS1 (Precision Simulator 1.3)

I understand from other messages that normally this is just a performance warning, but I'm not so sure in this case as even if I set the polling rate to 1 or 0, I still get this message all the time in the error log.

Any information anyone has on how to troubleshoot this, or indeed whether these messages could be related to the garbled sound, would be welcome.

thanks
Patrick.

I forgot a couple of things:
Using VDMSound 2.0.4 plus updates plus launchpad but I have also tried it on 2.1.0 with same results.

Also I know that many other people are succesfully running AS2 with VDMSound (in fact I did it on my previous PC with no problem).

Video mode - not sure but I guess it is software I don't think AS2 uses any Glide or Direct3d or anything like that.

Sound mode - Not sure what is meant by "sound mode" but the VDMSound options are pretty much set to default, except that I changed the output sound device to Microsoft Sound Mapper (Wave) as specified in the FAQ on the AS2 web site. (I have also tried it with Primary sound driver but the problem is the same).

With a retail price of:

Suggested retail price for AS2 will be 130,-- Euro or US$ 150,-- plus postage and shipping (Residents within the European Union without VAT-ID need to add 20% Mwst./VAT, making the price Euro 156,--).

only the people seriously into the flight sim genre would own this 'game' and so user community support can be limited.

I'm amazed that something still produced and sold today can require DOS or Win9x as an installation platform 😳 Yes, VDMSound will make it run but it was designed back in the day (NT) to support old games on newer operating systems.

Suggestions:
Try to find a user groups that specialise in this game, maybe someone out there knows the answer!
Try DOSBox - performance coul d be worse?
Configure your system for dual boot (DOS/WinXP)

Hope you find an answer!
