Hi to anyone whos willing to help me out , I just got my hands on a Primax Soundstorm and I'm aware that you can upgrade the memory to 1mb.
I've got some SOJ chips on my S3 Trio card that I'm considering adding to the primax , so basically I just wanted to know if the chips would be compatible and not fry the card or anything.
Thanks in advance.

If the Trio is using EDO ram, that will probably not work with your GUS-alike.
You'll probably want 256Kx16 fast page SOJs. Not sure about the speed but 70ns would be my guess.

Life isn't long enough to re-enable every hidden option in every BIOS on every board... 🙁

Do you have any recommendations on specific ram model numbers to look for?

I think EDO will work with Primax Soundstorm card - at least I had it in mine.

I seriously doubt that EDO will work with a NOS ultrasound IC from 1994. The RAM that's installed on this card is FPM, after looking up the datasheet for it:

The RAM in question: https://www.datasheet.live/index.php?title=Sp … 514260ALJ-8.pdf

Huh. Do the samples play back without corruption or glitches?
I still find it difficult to believe that a 1994 sound card would work properly with EDO, when so many 486 motherboards wouldn't.

Although looking at data sheets , it does seem like EDO differs a tiny bit from FPM , it seems the manual also recommends FPM.
So maybe ill grab a HYB514171BJ chip from ebay and play it safe.

I had FPM and EDO. Tested with both and there were no differences noticeable.

It is faster but it has nothing to do with "speed". EDO should be compatible with FPM. But in practice there are many incompatibilities with older motherboards and some video cards.

Okay so in a nutshell then , the EDO ram (VG264265BJ) specifically from my S3 should work with the Primax Soundstorm M16C I have , bug free right?

Uhhh just one other thing , I'm planning on using it alongside a sound blaster pro 2.0 , what jumper settings should I give it so it wont conflict?
the sbbpro is using the default A220 I5 D1 T3

That's actually an interesting topic. I've been using EDO SOJ chips on pretty much everything in the last five years, including various S3 cards, Primax Soundstorm Wave and GUS MAX, a bunch of VLB cards from Ark Logic, Matrox, Cirrus Logic, etc. So yeah, I can confirm that GUS cards don't have issues with EDO chips, and I've been using them with a bunch of demos and ProPatches Lite.

The ONLY card that seemed to give me issues with EDO RAM (corrupted image, etc) was Tseng ET4000/W32P for VLB.

I'm generally just using 240/7/7/7/7 for all my GUS cards. Using identical IRQ and DMA sets the card in half-duplex mode (meaning the card can't play and record at the same time), which is perfectly fine for games and demos.
