I just built my first V1 rig and I'm having some issues... I'm not sure what they are attributed to.

System specs:

  • Base is a HP Vectra XA
  • 200mhz Pentium MMX
  • 128mb ram
  • Soundblaster AWE 64 Gold
  • Diamond Monster 3D (Voodoo 1).
  • Matrox Millennium 2 (with ram expansion)
  • Win 95 OSR2 w/ all the updates

Here are the issues...
- In the 3DFX version of Mechwarrior 2, the game locks up approximately 1 minute into play.. regardless of mission or map. Graphics look fine and frame rate is good. I found that the issue is caused by my joystick (MS Sidewinder 3D Pro). When it's not connected, the game plays fine. I tried changing the joystick to a MS Sidewinder Precision Pro and the game still locks up at about 1min. I tried messing with the included Sidewinder software (using the MW profile) and the game will play for longer but still locks up.
- In Screamer2 with the 3DFX patch, the sound effects are messed up in the menus and there is the occasional thin black line (between two shapes/textures) on the road when driving.
- When playing any glide game, there is a slight distortion on the screen (like the monitor needs to be degaussed). The distortion made games unplayable on an LCD but its borderline OK on my old CRT. I'm assuming this is somewhat normal for a V1, but I was surprised how bad it was...

The issues persist regardless of the DX version or driver versions. Other glide games (like Tomb Raider and Unreal) work just fine. Audio sounds most games I've tested.

Any thoughts on what the issue might be?

This isn't normal.

The Voodoo1 does suffer from slightly reduced 2D image quality (e.g. Windows desktop) due to the pass through cable. But 3D should be completely fine. Can you describe these distortions in more detail or possibly take a photo?
