if you're hell bent on using the passthrough, then yes that's your best cable option

personally I use an Extron VSW 2VGA A external 2 port VGA auto switch powered by my V2 SLI PC's power supply

the V2 passthrough can't handle the bandwidth of high pixel clock desktop resolutions (1600x1200, 1080p, etc.)

it's seamless, same UX as using the built in passthrough
