I keep getting an I/O error followed by "File acpi.sys caused unexpected error (4096)" lockup during Windows 2000 install. I usually work around these kinds of issues by disabling ACPI but this board (ASRock K7VM2) does not have that option in the BIOS. I ran memtest and the memory is fine, so it is not a bad memory stick, apparently. Any pointers?

System:
AMD AthlonXP 2200+ 266MHZ FSB CPU
ASRock K7VM2 mATX Socket A Motherboard
3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 AGP with active cooling mod
Terratec DMX XFire 1024 CS4624 PCI sound card (A3D 1.0 & EAX 2.0)
LG 16x DVD-ROM IDE
Seagate 80GB HDD IDE
FSP 300W ATX PSU with 30A on 5V rail

Do you have SP4 slipstreamed onto the installation CD?

I remember having similar issues with stock Win2K but not with the SP4 version.

Yeah, it's an SP4 slipstreamed install CD that I used fine on many other PCs in the past.. Though I DID have to disable ACPI on some, the BIOS just did not get along well with Win2K. For this board, there is no option in BIOS that I can see.. Let me check BIOS updates..

There's a way to disable power management during installation too.

On the screen which says "press F6 for drivers" you press F5 instead and select "Standard PC". This will install Win2K without ACPI support.

I read this online, and tried it but it seems to trigger nothing no matter how many times I press F5 at that point. Strange 🙁 I'll try that again.

EDIT: I also found this: https://www.itprotoday.com/compute-engines/wh … 00-troubleshoot which says Press F7 for normal PC HAL, I'll also do that..

I just kept mashing F5/F7/F8 and eventually it took me to the computer type selection, where I picked Normal Computer and it is finally installing.. Phew.
