Just started a new resto project. A Unisys-branded Mistubishi MP-3200 386 PC from 1988. I'm finding this thing is old and built like a tank, so it quickly earned the nickname of Uncle Sherman. Got it for $65 "non-working" / untested, so some specs are not known to me yet.
- 386-16. (387 slot, not filled (yet))
- Memory unknown
- Oak OTI067-based VGA card
- Motherboard / Daughterboard configuration.
- 2 DE9 serial and one DB25 parallel onboard
- Not sure what the daughterboard is just yet. Proprietary connector. Labeled "SUBSYSTEM BOARD", no ports. A ton of identical DIPs so maybe memory.
- Seagate 131Mb IDE HD ST3144A (On a separate IDE card /cable not connected to MoBo)
- Chinon FZ-357 1.44Mb 3.5" floppy.
- Chinon FZ-506 1.2Mb 5.25 Floppy drive. (shared cable to MoBo with 3.5" floppy drive)
- Intel "Above Board PS AT" card with extra memory(?) and an extra DE9 Serial / DB25 Parallel port
The Good:
- Not been opened in a LONG time. Nobody has had a go at fixing it.
- All the internals appears to be in great physical shape (except...)
- All boards tested with multimeter. No shorts. No electrolytic caps.
The Bad:
- I captured all the eproms and saved the files. All except the VGA card... Eprom is an AM27C256 and my T866ii reports pin detection faults on the output data pins. I will have to get replacement eprom and download/program it.
- The case has mouse crap in one corner. No corrosion though, so maybe recent? Nowhere near any boards, though.
The Ugly:
- The logic board for the hard drive has a couple of tantlums that have blown up. The board looks bad but I suspect I can just replace the two caps and at least give it a chance. I've set a limit of $10 and 2 hours to fix the HD - I won't "use" it on an ongoing basis, but it may have useful information / configuration / drivers on it. The burn smells fresh. Maybe they tried to fire it up for the ebay listing, and took "fire" a little too literally.
Next steps:
- Test PSU
- Obtain eprom and rom image for VGA card
- Try to fix the HD..?
- XTIDE card for permanent HD replacement.
- Clean the case and boards
- Ressemble and test
- Wolfenstein
- Sell on ebay for ...one meeelion dollars... (Dr Evil Laugh)
