Will a 486 run a GT520 or something like a mx4000? I know FX5500/5600's are jokes but are they viable as well?

Some MX4000 and FX5200 cards - yes. Latter may have problems with 3D acceleration, because 486 does not support any Pentium-class instructions and drivers required are a bit too fresh.

FX5500 is a joke? On 486 CPU? That's certainly a joke!
I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.
none of those cards are viable for a 486
Only one way to find out I guess. 😀
As said: There may be an issue with the PCI version or even the power it'll draw. Be careful.
My best guess is you want this because lolz and proof of concept? Any 486 will have plenty with any simple S3 trio64 or virge. The fastest 5x86@150/160/200 might actually be able to use a Voodoo 1, but other than that it's just a waste to try a 3D card.
Stuck at 10MHz...
Quadro 4 NVS100 can work on 486 (GeForce 4 MX), depending on motherboard. Best possible performance can be achieved only with Voodoo 2, Banshee or Voodoo 3. This applies to all weak CPUs.
Playing early 3D is certainly possible. Turok runs somewhat decent on high-end 486.

486's are different by bus system. Isa, Eisa, VL-bus and PCI. Most modern one is PCI of course. You can search for a graphics card for your mainboard graphics card build.
Be aware that almost none of the 486 BIOSes is able to initialize a graphics chip that is behind a PCI bridge (and to boot with this graphics chip).
This is important for all graphics card that contain an AGP to PCI bridge.

In the late 90's I tried to upgrade a Compaq Pentium 90 with a better video card, and I remember my card of choice would not work because the BIOS/system could not assign an IRQ to VGA. Riva 128 worked, but l did not like the hardware rendering quality in Half-Life. Long story short: S3 Virge PCI.
