Hello, This is my first post and I hope it is ok joining to ask for help getting an old game working.
The game is Entente Gold which is available on steam, it is a world war 1 RTS game.
Running the game normally via steam leads to a menu but with a frozen mouse. The music plays but nothing else happens and the game needs closing in task manager.
Trying windows compatibility settings doesn't help.
Win 95 game doesn't launch,
Win 98 command line fatal error
Win XP, ME, 7 and 8 launches but freezes on mouse movement, needs closing in task manager, not responding.
Running as administrator or disabling full screen optimisations make no difference.
I've tried using DxWnd using suggestions on the steam forum
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filede … /?id=1696200415
but the first intro splash video plays but then returns to desktop.
So I tried dgvoodoo2 (Ver 2.79.3) as this works in so many games and others had some success which they shared in steam guides.
This gets the game to launch and it does not freeze on the menu with mouse movement.
However in game there were 2 issues.
1: Scrolling the window around (with arrow keys or by moving to the edge made all the units disappear)
2: The game slowed down when the mouse cursor is in motion
There is a .bat file in the game directory called runonradeon. This seems to add the launch option of + radeon1 (I can also add this in the steam launch option with the same result)
This eliminates the unit disappearing problem, but the game slowing down with the mouse cursor still exists.
It feels like it is so close to this game working but I have run out of ideas.
I remember a similar issue got introduced with a nvidia driver a year ago for games like act of war. It seemed to be related to hardware mouse settings. But some of the temporary fixes from back then (enabling mouse trails, changing mouse polling rate) had no effect in this case. That issue was eventually fixed on later nvidia drivers.
If anyone has any suggestions about how I might get this game working I would be very grateful.
If there are any details I have omitted please let me know.
