I picked up a Microsoft IntelliMouse 1.1A Serial mouse and when booting my 286 or 386 with cute mouse it isn't detected.

If I boot the computer with another generic serial mouse and then swap the mice while the machine is running it works fine.

Any ideas? Do I need a special driver for it?

Could be a bad mouse or the Cute mouse driver does not initial the MS mouse but does the generic. Have you tried a real MS mouse driver ?
My experience with serial older MS mice is that early versions can be picky so use a true MS mouse driver (usually v7.6 or v8.2) even though it takes more ram than other drivers.
TBO I never use cute mouse driver. If MS mouse use MS driver, if Logitech use their driver.... but that is just me...

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Thanks for the reply. I tried it in a Windows98 machine and no issues, works fine.

I’ll update after I test another driver in dos.
