"Master of Magic" is something of a troublemaker. Do a quick search on it and you'll see what I'm talking about. Even those who get it working properly seem to have pausing audio problem, noted here:

Yes, those are my exact problems with MOM. I guess I'm easily pleased because just being able to play it with only sound effects turned off but still having music on is enough for me.

Re: HOG - by "my own experience with the original CD, which came up with nothing at all." - do you mean there is no problem with using the game with original cd within vdsm? If so I could keep an eye on ebay for the game to surface(only played the demo and would like to try the full game)

No, I mean I got nowhere. Not even a startup.

I have completed the setup of Hammer of the Gods both of sound and the program. With intro playing I get about 7 seconds of sound before it cuts out. Without intro I still get the frozen start screen.

I would like to try using hamgam.exe instead of hammer.bat but when I use hamgam a window comes up asking my to type the word hammer to play the game and then it doesn't allow me to type in the dos miniscreen.

I think that is where I would type hammer z to try it without sound. Any idea on how I could try this?

I also attached my error log while running the intro.

The log says suggests that the game quit by itself (probably after encountering some exception).

I dunno about you guys.. yes MOM is an EXCELLENT game.. I personally STILL love it and STILL play it.. with pausing sound and w/o sound.... but there is a newer game out I learned about yesterday its not really new.. more along the civ 2 era... called "Age of Wonders".. its friggin sweet.. VERY VERY VERY simmilar to the master or magic game.. just that its more of a stratgey game and less of a civilization game... you can build everything but cities.. (until its modded someday).. and it HAS FULL windows and SOUND capibility.. you guys should look into it I love it.

I agree that Age of Wonders is cool. I've played that before, it's been a while though. I played the demo of AOW2 as well. The AOW series a different flavor than MOM but has been called by some the heir of MOM. I can see that to an extent, but I'd say it was more like a stepchild.

But back to the main gist of the thread and giving some additional data. I've tested Machiavelli the Prince as I read somewhere that it's engine is the same/similar to the engine used for Hammer of the Gods and sure enough. I run into the same exact problems with that as I did with HOG. It freezes at the Menu screen on my W2Kpro system. The only difference being that I could watch the intro to Machiavelli under vdmSound with the command line switch of -VESA, whereas I couldn't see anything from HOG.

So continues the saga. I'm running out of ideas here, though I was trying to read up on how to get the disk cache to a smaller size. I seem to remember debugging Baldur's Gate by emptying out a cache that was too full and changing the settings. Any further ideas appreciated, I'll be back after X-mas.
