I got myself PCI card that finally works as PCI sound blaster to me. However, when I set digitized sounds and music to SB compatible what I hear is clean but when I set anything MIDI no matter port 240 (default) or 220 music crackles a lot what is unbearable to me. Is my card broken or is it normal behavior for out of spec environment? My OS is win98, device is Futro s400 and sound card is ESS Maestro-2 on ES1968S chip. I can stay with Sound Blaster only if MIDI behavior is normal, if not I can return this card yet.

I am not sure if it is of any help but on my Maestro-1 card, you get crackles etc. when the signal level goes too high, the fix was to lower master (or perhaps MIDI) volume until it stopped... Maybe Maestro-2 is affected same way. It has been years since I used my card.

Well, thanks for quick reply. 😀 That seems to be the case for CD-Audio, when I lower it improoves, with Midi I don't know but I'll test it. Also ES1989S aka ESS-Allegro on the way for this particular reason.
This is my card:
