Whenever I set and Compatibility setting it gets stored in HKCU or HKLM/SOFTWARE/.../Compatibility Assistant/Layers

For example, if I enable Windows XP SP2 and 640x480 compatibility modes, the key inside Layers saves it as:
"WINXPSP2 640X480"

However I have seen cases where it says:

"~ WINXPSP2 640X480"
or
"$ WINXPSP2 640X480"
or
"~$ WINXPSP2 640X480"

How do these ~ and $ affect programs?

These are jokers/wildcards, I think - not sure why they are there, though. 🤷‍♂️

I thought they disable/enable things, but instead the key gets removed. I can't seem to find a documentation either.
