The sound is only coming out of the internal speakers. Is there anyway I can get it to come through my external ones?
For the earlier games, use DOSBox. For the later games, configure them properly.
Yes, it’s my fault.
The earlier ones in the series (1 through 3 probably), only PC speaker sound is supported (maybe Tandy too if you run in DOSBox). For the newer ones, you'll need to run the INSTALL utility with VDMSound and select which sound card to use (Soundblaster or Adlib are probably the best choices for use with VDMSound), then run the game with VDMSound.
Also, I think there's a 2.1.0 beta version of VDMSound that works better. I haven't used VDMSound in years though...
For the earlier games, you can also try searching for AGISB, which is a patch that makes the older Sierra games (AGI games) output to the Adlib/Soundblaster that VDMSound emulates instead of to the PC Speaker.
