Before I start I just wanna say that I've read the thread made by Snover about asking for help. I've tried to follow the guidelines in there, but maybe I've missed something. So, don't tell me off for that, then. I'm no computer freak, I'm just trying to get my favourite game to work.

So, the problem. I don't get any sound despite the fact that I run it through VMDSound. I've changed the sound settings that is *in the game* and tested both Sound Blaster and AdLIb. Either the computer freeze for about five minutes and then exit to Windows with some error messages. Or it exits to Windows directly without any error messages. One time it didn't freeze or so but then just to tell me "couldn't find a Sound-Blaster card in this machine". I've tried to change the settings through VMDSound Launchpad but since I'm no computer freak I didn't understand much of it.

1. Motherboard I don't know
2. P4 2,0 GHZ
3. 256 MB DDR PC2100 (266 MHZ)
4. Geforce 4 MX 64 MB SDRAM (I think it's SDRAM, not sure, though)
5. SB Audigy Audio [1040] (Not sure what that number stands for)
6. Windows XP (Right now I hate it)
7. NHL 95 is the game I've got problems with
8. For description of the problem, read above.
9. I can never get the sound working
10. I have no idea what Sound Mode I'm using.
11. Neither do I know what Video Mode I use.

I got some sound by switching to MT-32 as the sound card in the in-game menu. I also changed to Roland MT-32 as Midi Emulation in the properties for my shortcut to NHL 95. Sadly, the sound is extremely silly, and I can't hear everything.

Another thing, sometimes the computer complains that I've got too little virtual memory when the game starts.

Hmm... have you tried "MPU-401" instead of "MT-32" for the MIDI? If MT-32 is really the only thing that works, you should go into the VDMSound Launchpad and change the MIDI mapper to mt32.map so that it is played using the correct instruments (ergo, it'll stop sounding funny).
Could someone provide a link to this game so it can be tested?

Yes, it’s my fault.

Relax. We're just trying to gather as much information as possible so as to narrow down the possibilities of what might be wrong.

I don't get any sound despite the fact that I run it through VMDSound.

So your video is OK, right? Reason I'm asking is because MobyGames lists it as an SVGA (VESA) game and VESA works differently on XP and has often been a problem.

Either the computer freeze for about five minutes and then exit to Windows with some error messages. Or it exits to Windows directly...

Is it possible to configure the game for no sound or "pc speaker" sound? If so, try that (no SB/AdLib) and run it for about ten minutes or so. Maybe it's a NT issue within the game itself.

I've tried to change the settings through VMDSound Launchpad but since I'm no computer freak I didn't understand much of it.

You have VDMSound and it's GUI "LaunchPad". Did you install (copy over) the "Update 1" files?
from http://vdmsound.sourceforge.net/files/ ?
(more specifically)
http://vdmsound.sourceforge.net/files/VDMSoun … 0.4.update1.zip

Mobygames has this listed as requiring a 386. If it's not using a "protected mode", it "might" work on DosBox. Hard to tell without a demo. I can't seem to find a demo for this, anyone know of one?

If all else fails, you could emulate a console version.

The video is OK, even if I don't run it through VDMSound. I can change to PC Speaker, but then it's quite.
I tried with DosBox, but it didn't work. And I have updated.

I have no MT32.map. I only have these:

gm2mt.map
identity.map
joy1.map
joy2.map
joy3.map
mt2gm.map

Ok, that's one less issue.

Ermm...Yes, but does it work? Does it seem to run properly without audio?

I tried with DosBox, but it didn't work.

Hrmm. Must use a protected mode, so that's a dead end.

I have no MT32.map.

I think what he meant was that you need to change your configuration on your VDMSound shortcut (.VLP). Right-click on it to get it's "Properties" (the left-click on Properties at the bottom). You'll get the setup window on the left.

Under "MIDI Emulation", click on the "Roland MT-32" button instead using General MIDI. Then click the "Advanced button at the bottom to get the Advanced window (displayed here on the right).

On the "Advanced" window, click on the MIDI tab. Now look for the "Dev" button (Device), click on the downward arrow and choose the GS wavetable. Click OK, then Click OK again. You're done.

And yes, it works fine with PC Speaker but without audio.

You need to be more clear on this.

Do you mean that you changed the MIDI settings and:

1) It doesn't produce MIDI music?
2) It sounds precisely the same as before you changed settings.
3) It sounds different, but you think it still sounds "wrong"

Also, did you check to see if NHL recognizes XP's built-in emulation?

And yes, it works fine with PC Speaker but without audio

Well at least that confirms the game seems stable and that this is a "digital audio" problem.

I meant mt2gm.map. The radio button that Nicht mentioned *should* do the same thing.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Please search all hard-disks on your system for files called "*.sys" (without the quotes) that contain (inside the file) "Ke386" (without the quotes). At least one file should come up. Which files are those?

And I did search for that file but couldn't find it (and yes, I searched all my drives and included hidden maps and such).

What do you mean with XP's built-in-emulation?

Ok. Then your MIDI is fine, you just don't like the results. It happens. Most MIDI from DOS games tends be a matter of taste.

What do you mean with XP's built-in-emulation?

*auch* XP has it's own SoundBlaster emulation built-in it's OS. Basically, it emulates (apparently) a SoundBlaster v2.0 (an 8-Bit mono card). Settings for that should be:
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 P330 T2
(You shouldn't have to put this in, but some DOS programs will want it).

It's inferior to Vlad's emulation, but it's an option you can try.

If it doesn't recognize the SoundBlaster still..., try this:
For some "quick and easy" titles to test, you might try the CHAMP games at http://www.champ-em.com/

They are relatively small DOS games that are pretty easy to test: no need for configuration as they auto-configure themselves for basic SoundBlaster or "PC Speaker" only. If they won't give you digital audio, then something's probably wrong with your OS.

Thanks for all the help guys but I don't need any more. I just installed it on our old computer with Windows 98 instead of ¤%#&! XP! It works fine.

Closing thread: RESOLVED (uh, kinda 😉)
