Looking at board layouts, the Gigabyte GA-6BXE includes 5 PCI and 2 ISA slots versus the 4 PCI and 3 ISA slots on the Gigabyte GA-6BXC. And the Gigabyte GA-6BXE has an extra DIMM slot.

Other than that and general component layout, are there any other significant differences between these two boards?

Any recommendation of one versus the other?

GA-6BXE has four DIMM slots and supports up to 1GiB of RAM versus 768 for GA-6BXC.

Actually GA-6BXE has 4 pci, 1 isa and one "shared <meaning one or the other>" pci/isa, the GA-6BXC has full 3 pci and 2 isa and one "shared" (from the aspect of the case) if I read the pics and manuals properly.
Depends on what you are going to add to it.

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Whoops, I should have noted that in the OP too. Forgot about the DIMM slots.
