Hi,

I was booting up my Compaq Prolinea the other day and I got Windows Protection Error, please reboot (or something like that but in Swedish). It boots to DOS and into windows safety mode.

I'm going to reinstall Windows 95 but I'm curious what is causing this error. I have a vague memory that this can be because you made significant hardware changes to the machine after a windows installation.

Usually caused by a divide-by-zero error in a module (you didn't give the full message) when the CPU speed exceeds 350MHz.

Microsoft issued some patches at the time to fix it.

In this case, the machine is a pentium 1 120 so nothing too fast. (And hasn't changed since it was working.)

There was no more information in the message, just protective error, please restart and same again if I do so. I'll attempt to remove some cards and let the proprietary pnp bios update.
